Regional Barometer

Regional Barometer (MAL Barometer) is a survey conducted by the municipalities of the Helsinki region and HSL to study residents’ views on housing and travel in the region.

The survey results are used in land use, housing and transport (MAL) planning. HSL is responsible for preparing the Helsinki Region Transport System Plan as part of MAL planning. In addition, the results are used by other organizations and agencies involved in land use, housing and transport planning in the region. Read more about MAL planning here.

The next Regional Barometer will be conducted in spring 2026. Survey invitations will be sent by post to residents randomly selected from the Population Information System. Responses will be collected via online and postal surveys.

The most recent Regional Barometer was conducted in early 2021. Previous surveys were carried out in 2018 and 2017.
