How the mobility budget works for travel during the workday

HSL Business Travel is intended for travel during the workday. You can issue employees a freely chosen amount as a flexible mobility budget.

The mobility budget is a payment method that employees can use to purchase tickets using the HSL app at the employer’s expense, up to the agreed limit.

You can issue the mobility budget either as a one‑off budget or a monthly budget. The selected budget type applies to all beneficiaries.

The one‑off budget is an amount issued manually once or several times a year. The monthly budget is a predefined amount that is automatically allocated each month.

Employees can use the mobility budget to purchase exactly the tickets they need for work-related journeys. The budget can be used to purchase single tickets, multi‑journey tickets (10‑ and 20‑journey), day tickets (1–13 days) and season tickets (30–360 days; does not apply to auto‑renewing saver tickets). If you want to restrict which tickets employees can purchase using the budget, we recommend establishing common rules within your organization.

When you issue a mobility budget for an employee, they can start using it immediately. Employees’ purchases are invoiced afterwards on a monthly consolidated invoice. There are no costs to the employer for unused budget.

Communicate clearly to the beneficiaries how HSL Business Travel may be used. When purchasing a ticket in the HSL app, the employee enters a journey description in accordance with the employer’s instructions.

You can view how your employee has used the mobility budget in the beneficiary’s details. In the list of purchases and the Purchases report, you can see the tickets purchased, the purchase date and the journey description entered by the employee.

For multi‑journey tickets, the journey description is entered only for the first ticket. For this reason, the report available in the Business Portal does not show usage times of individual tickets within a multi‑journey ticket; it only shows the purchase of the multi-journey ticket itself.

From Commuter Benefit to HSL Business Travel

In the first version of HSL Business Travel, it is not possible to provide the same employee with both the HSL Commuter Benefit and HSL Business Travel.

If an employee who currently uses the HSL Commuter Benefit (either an auto‑renewing season ticket or a mobility budget) wants to start using HSL Business Travel, follow these steps:

End the employee's commuter benefit by selecting End benefit. Do not use the Edit benefit validity button or select a date.

After this, send the employee a new invitation to start using HSL Business Travel.
