A smooth commute starts at home

The Commuter Benefit (also called an employer-subsidized commuter ticket) is a tax-free benefit for employees. The ticket is valid for the zones between home and work. Employees can use it also for leisure travel. You can offer the Commuter Benefit in the form of a season ticket or a mobility budget. Both of these are used via the HSL app.

Business Travel is for journeys made during the workday, such as customer visits or moving between office locations. Employees receive a balance for these journeys to be used in the HSL app. When using the balance, employees add a description of the journey's purpose. By starting to use HSL Business Travel, you can get rid of ticket receipts and expense claims.

The costs depend on the benefit or ticket you wish to offer and on how large a part of your staff you offer it to.

For example, if you choose to offer the commuter benefit in the form of a mobility budget, you can freely choose the amount you offer and set it to be issued monthly or once a year.

You’ll always pay only for the benefits used (activated tickets and mobility budget spent). There will be no additional costs for the unused benefits. In addition, the benefits are tax-deductible for your company.

You can offer the commuter benefit and other mobility solutions either to all employees or to a limited group of employees, for example, those who work on-site or those who work at a specific office location. You can also adjust the amount of benefit offered by person or group.

HSL’s mobility solutions for employers are tax-deductible and, in most cases, tax-free for employees.

For example, the commuter benefit is a tax-free fringe benefit up to €3,400 per year:

• If you offer the commuter benefit as an auto-renewing season ticket, it meets the conditions for tax exemption. The prices of all HSL season tickets are clearly below the annual limit for tax exemption.
• If you offer the commuter benefit as a mobility budget, no report needs to be submitted for benefits up to €900. The benefit amount may be higher, but in that case, the employer must provide the tax authorities with information about the employee's actual travel expenses between home and work.

The employee activates the benefit issued to them and uses it in the HSL app with their personal credentials.

The benefits are easy to use, and no separate cards or credentials are required.

When using Epassi, Edenred, Smartum or Zevoy balance, the employee must add the relevant employee-benefit partner as a payment method in the HSL app. This is easy and takes only a couple of taps.

You can offer the commuter benefit as an auto‑renewing season ticket or a mobility budget, and set different amounts for each employee, so that the overall cost fits into your budget.
