HSL in 2024

In 2024, the capital region experienced exceptionally extensive construction work. Metro services in central Helsinki were disrupted throughout the summer due to the renovation of the Central Railway Station Metro Station. Several tram routes, commuter trains, and bus routes were also diverted because of construction work. In August, we celebrated the opening of a brand-new tram route 13, which operates between Pasila and Kalasatama. We also introduced a new bus route, 554, which quickly gained popularity.

There were a total of 361 million boardings during the year (344 million in 2023). Operating revenue amounted to EUR 872.3 million (EUR 815 million in 2023). Ticket revenue accounts for 43 percent of our income, while municipal contributions from our owner municipalities for 55 percent.

Overall satisfaction with HSL’s transport services increased

In the international BEST survey that compares public transport services, HSL's results improved from 2023. Overall satisfaction increased from 72 percent in the previous year to 75 percent. In the NPS survey (recommendation index), HSL achieved a very good score of 40 in the fall, with an average score of 38 for the entire year. In the customer satisfaction survey, the percentage of satisfied customers decreased from 86 percent to 83 percent.

Tram route 13 started operating between Kalasatama and Pasila

The new tram route 13 started operating on August 12. The tram runs from Kalasatama Metro Station to Pasila station in 12 minutes. The journey from end to end, from the Nihti terminus in Sompasaari to Maistraatintori in Länsi-Pasila, takes 21–22 minutes. The journey times are fast because the tram mostly runs on a dedicated lane and has traffic signal priorities. The average speed of the trams is higher than that of the traditional central city tram services. The average speed reaches 19–21 km/h, while in the city center, the average speed of trams is about 14 km/h.

Bus route 554 operating along Ring I turned out popular

The bus route 554, which started operating in August, quickly became a success story. During the planning phase, we conducted extensive surveys to gather customers ideas regarding the development of public transport on Ring I. The direct bus service exceeded customer expectations already in the first months of operation.  The target for the first year of operation, set at over 600,000 boardings, has already been surpassed. The bus route serves a large customer base, as approximately 100,000 residents of Helsinki and Espoo live within a walking distance of the bus stops along Ring I.

Responsibility program with three focus areas

Our responsibility program is built on the foundation of a sustainable economy and people who make a difference. It focuses on three key areas: public transport is for everyone, sustainable mobility solutions, and carbon-neutral public transport.

We want to ensure that all our customers have the opportunity to travel in a sustainable and safe way. We promote mobility in collaboration with our partners.

In the fall, we joined the government's anti-racism campaign “Actions, not only words" with our own commitment. We want to provide a safe and harassment-free space for both public transport passengers and staff.

Our goal is to provide zero-emission public transport by 2035.

Compared to 2010, the carbon dioxide emissions of transport services procured by HSL had decreased by 71 percent by the end of 2024. The share of zero-emission electric buses in the bus fleet is already 41.5 percent.
