Discount tickets
Students, children aged 7 to 17, pensioners receiving a pension from Kela, people over 70, and people with reduced mobility who live permanently in the HSL area can buy HSL tickets at a discounted rate.
In addition, children aged 7 to 17 and people over 70 can buy tickets at a discounted rate if they have a temporary address in the HSL area.
Visually impaired people and veterans of Finnish wars are entitled to a free HSL card. Wheelchair users do not need a ticket on HSL public transport.
Please note that your home municipality or registered address may affect your eligibility for a discount.
Discounts available in the HSL app or on the HSL card
Students
If you are a full-time student, you can buy season tickets at a 40% discount using the HSL app or your HSL card if your home municipality is in the HSL area. The discount does not apply to single and zone extension tickets.
You can activate the discount yourself in the HSL app, or you can visit a service point to update the discount entitlement on your HSL card. When visiting a service point, remember to bring all required documents.
School journey ticket (Kela)
Are you an upper secondary student who has been granted a school transport subsidy by Kela? If you receive a decision on your application for a school transport subsidy from Kela, you can conveniently purchase your ticket using the HSL app or on your HSL card at a service point.
Children
Children under 7 do not need a ticket.
Children aged 7 to 17 can buy tickets at a 50% discount in the HSL app or with an HSL card if their home municipality is in the HSL area. If the child has a temporary address in the HSL area, they can buy discounted season tickets only on an HSL card.
Regardless of the home municipality or registered address, single and day tickets for children are available via the HSL app, with value loaded on an HSL card, at sales and service points, and at ticket machines.
The HSL app is available free of charge from app stores. HSL cards are available at service points (€5). The card can be topped up in the HSL Ticket Store or at sales and service points.
70+ passengers
If you are aged 70 or over, you can buy season tickets at a 40% discount with the HSL app or HSL card if your home municipality is in the HSL area. Please note that if your address in the area is temporary, you can buy discounted season tickets only on an HSL card. The discount applies only to season tickets; you can buy other tickets at adult rates.
You cannot purchase a discounted season ticket in advance; the discount becomes available only once you have turned 70.
Your discount entitlement is updated on your HSL card automatically when you turn 70, provided that you have completed strong authentication in the HSL app, in the HSL Ticket Store, or at the HSL service point or a municipal service point.
Discounts available only on the HSL card
Pensioners (Kela)
If you receive a national pension, guarantee pension or a cash rehabilitation benefit from Kela (the Social Insurance Institution of Finland) and your home municipality is in the HSL area, you can buy season, single and zone extension tickets at a 50% discount with your HSL card. The pensioner discount is not available in the HSL app.
Visit a service point to have the discount entitlement added to your HSL card. Please bring an ID document, your HSL card, a Kela national pension card or a national pension, guarantee pension or cash rehabilitation benefit certificate from Kela. The certificate must be no older than 3 months. A pension decision issued by Kela is not enough to receive the discount. The discount entitlement is granted for a maximum of three years at a time.
People with reduced mobility
You can get a 50% discount on tickets if your mobility is impaired owing to a permanent injury or chronic disease, your home municipality is in the HSL area, and you meet certain conditions. You can get a discount on season tickets, single tickets, and zone extension tickets when you purchase them with your HSL card. The discount is not available in the HSL app.
You can add the discount entitlement to your HSL card by visiting a service point.
Why does my place of residence affect my discount?
The municipalities in the HSL area and the neighboring municipalities subsidize public transport for their residents by paying compensation to HSL. This enables residents to buy tickets at a lower price.
For this reason, your home municipality or registered address affects whether you are entitled to a discount based on your customer group.
